Laser alignment of wind turbines

Interpretation of measurement results and alignment correction

Collecting data is only half the battle. The real challenge lies in interpreting it correctly and performing precise alignment. Systems such as Optalign Touch present results in a highly intuitive graphical format, displaying both parallel and angular misalignment in two planes—vertical and horizontal. Numerical values are compared against tolerance standards (e.g., ISO), and colored icons (e.g., a smiley or frowny face) clearly indicate whether the machine is within tolerance or requires correction.

Adjustment always takes place in two stages. First, the vertical alignment is corrected by adding or removing precision shims under the generator feet. Modern systems feature a “Live Move” function that shows in real time how the machine is moving, eliminating the need for guesswork. Once the vertical plane is set, the adjustment in the horizontal plane is performed using adjustment screws. The entire process is monitored in real time until the desired values are achieved. Such precise adjustment is a fundamental element of effective wind turbine repair.

Preparing for Laser Alignment of a Wind Turbine

The effectiveness of alignment measurements depends largely on careful preparation. Before the laser system is activated, the technician must perform a series of key steps to ensure the reliability of the results and the safety of the operation. Proper wind turbine alignment begins long before the sensors are installed. Neglecting this step can lead to erroneous readings and, consequently, to incorrect corrections that, instead of helping, will worsen the condition of the machine.

The preparatory procedure primarily involves fully securing the turbine in accordance with the LOTO (Lock-Out/Tag-Out) protocol, locking the rotor, and engaging the mechanical brake. The surfaces of the shafts and the machine’s base must be thoroughly cleaned. It is absolutely critical to check for and eliminate the phenomenon known as “soft foot,” which is a situation where one of the machine’s feet does not fully contact the foundation. Basic technical data, such as rotational speed, must also be collected so that the system can automatically select the appropriate alignment tolerances.

Precise alignment of the generator and gearbox shafts is essential for the reliable operation of any wind turbine. Even minimal misalignment generates destructive vibrations, leading to premature wear of bearings, couplings, and seals. This guide serves as a knowledge compendium for service technicians, explaining step by step how to professionally perform alignment using modern laser systems.

Laser alignment of wind turbines is a critical maintenance process that ensures the generator shaft and gearbox are coaxial, thereby minimizing vibration, wear, and the risk of failure.
